G1: Understand the features of single camera production

Identify different formats within TV Dramas - what are the similarities and differences (create a comparative analysis, with reference to specific examples)

Identify different narrative structures with reference to specific examples, inc. impact on the audience

Doctor Who

Doctor Who is filmed much like any other TV show, there’s a regular set that gets revisited almost every episode and then there are new sceneries almost every episode as well. The episodes are recorded on multiple different cameras at any one time so that the scenes camera angles can change mid scene to either give you a different view on the characters or to point something new out to you, such as the introduction of a new character. This show also includes the use of CGI for special effects. This show only follows two or three main characters at the same time in the same story.

The narrative of Doctor Who also adds to the genre through the use of travelling to a different time period (past or future) or to another planet. Although Doctor Who shows The Doctor and his assistant(s) travelling through time and space, the events within the episode are shown in a linear structure.

Both shows have multiple cameras recording at any one time in order to show the viewer’s more.

Both have scenes that are revisited each episode.

Both have reappearing characters in each episode.

Doctor Who uses CGI in its show unlike EastEnders which does not.

Doctor who introduces different scenes in each episode whereas EastEnders does not.

EastEnders

EastEnders is filmed with multiple different cameras at any one time so that you get to see all of the characters who are in the scene, the camera angle normally changes when different characters are speaking. There is only one big set for this show which includes a set for each of the characters houses, a few public areas such as a market or pub, and a wide view of the entire estate in which the show is recorded. Rarely are any new scenes introduced as each episode is based at the same estate just if different parts of it. This show can follow multiple different stories at any one time.

This is the ‘hook’ for a soap audience. It is a fundamental generic code.

Narrative pleasure evokes satisfaction in audiences.

Open ended narratives- no closure at the end of the episode, the only time when there are moments of closure is with a death or departure of a character. (1964 episode of Corro when a popular est. character at the time (Martha) dies).

Cliff-hangers- give audience an urge to see how the story will conclude and continue. (Phil and grant returning out of the taxi).

Multiple narratives- the amount of narrative strands has increased and developed over the years, as researchers have spotted audience’s values of gossip and wanting to know everything about everyone (Chardenfroid).

Average up to six storylines in progress in one episode.

Eastenders follows multiple different characters and stories at the same time whereas Doctor Who focuses on one story at a time.

How is mise-en-scene, sound and editing used within TV Dramas, with specific reference to examples

Mise-en-scene- This is used in all scenes of TV Dramas in order to either show you something specific, to give you a good view of what is going on and to simply look good. Even if there is no set in the scene

mise-en-scene is being used because no set was included for a deliberate reason to make you feel or think a certain thing.

Sound- This is always being used. the used of sound can be for many different reasons; to highlight a certain character speaking, to draw attention to a recent event or ruckus, or if there is music to set the mood for a scene.

Editing- This is used for the main reason of putting scenes in order, to remove and mistakes in the footage and to add sound or other effects to the footage.

Song lyrics/Script

It's just another boring Saturday night,

That's filled with alcohol and drunken fights,

That's filled with MDMA and paradise,

Paradise for some,

And ideally attempt to look our best,

But all the flashing lights I light are sweat,

And stella stains that lay upon her dress,

We're just disasters,

We're just disasters in distress,

And her stilettos have seen better days,

Sat by the toilet,

It's not even late,

Guess that her mind goes along with the pain,

With the pain,

But anyway,

Send my blessings to the remix tracks, And dancers who don't care,

Send my best to the scents of lynx and the Smirnoff in the air,

Whilst you're there tell the stoners who buy after nine o'clock,

And them perverts on the dance floor,

Who attempt to touch you up,

It's just another boring Saturday night,

And this time baby maybe, I'm alright,

I think I'd much rather prefer the sights,

Of Game of Thrones and all that other shite, on TV,

Waiting for me when I'm just sat at home,

Under the duvet I ignore my phone,

And you can join me if you want to show,

But I'm sure your Snapchat will soon let me know,

It's just another boring Saturday,

And I'd been thinking about the memories made,

And you’ll make none of yours stuck in that state,

And I'm in a state to see you stuck this way,

But anyway,

Send my blessings to the remix tracks,

And the dancers who don't care,

And send my best to the scents of lynx and Smirnoff in the air,

Whilst you're there tell the stoners who buy after nine o'clock,

And them perverts on the dance floor who attempt to touch you up,

It's just another boring Saturday night,

And this time baby maybe I'm alright,

I think I'd much rather prefer the sights,

Of Game of Thrones and all that other shite on TV,

Waiting for me when I'm just sat at home,

Under the duvet I ignore my phone,

And you can join me if you want to show,

But I'm sure your Snapchat will soon let me know.

Narrative structures

Non Linear -because the footage in the video is not in order of a night out and then a hangover. Instead we see little sections of different parts of the night at random points.

Realist - It shows real experiences the audience should be able to relate to, it does not include any element of Sci-Fi.

Treatment

Showing the effects of a night out. We can see footage of both the drinking and the aftermath. The lyrics talk about a Saturday night as though the cliché of going out and getting drunk is overrated because of the feeling you get the morning after.
